What's Up Tonight? ("we", "the app") helps you find events, places, and pickup games near you in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, on the web and in our iPhone app. This page says, in plain language, what the app collects, why, and how to make it stop.
Your taste profile. Interests, age range (if given), a first name (if given), how far you'll travel, your Sober mode and Sensory-friendly settings, teams you follow, saved, hidden and "going" events, your swipe answers, and a list of the events you've opened (with the time you opened them, up to 200). It's kept on your device and, while you have an anonymous or signed-in account, also on our servers so it syncs between visits and devices. Delete account removes the server copy.
Your location. If you tap "Use my current location," your device works out where you are and the app sends those coordinates once to Nominatim (run by the OpenStreetMap Foundation) to name the town you're in. When you type a town or address, that text, along with the area you currently have set, goes to Photon (run by komoot) and Nominatim to suggest matching places. We save the place you chose so the app opens near you: on your device as you entered it, and on our servers only as the town name and a map point rounded to about 1 km (just over half a mile). It's replaced each time you change it. We never keep a history of where you've been.
Approximate location from your connection. When you open our home page, our host looks up the city your internet connection is registered to, so we can show nearby events before you tell us where you are. We don't store it.
Account (optional). If you create an account, we store your email address so you can sign in on other devices. Your password is handled by our sign-in provider and stored only as a secure, one-way hash; we never see or store the password itself. If you choose Continue with Apple or Google (when offered), that company tells us your email address (Apple may give us a private relay address instead), and we never receive your Apple or Google password.
Profile picture and name (optional). If you add a photo on your profile page (from your photo library or your camera), we store a small square copy of it and show it, with your first name, on plans you send to friends. Anyone with one of those plan links can see it. Remove the photo from your profile page at any time and it's deleted from our servers. Plans you already sent keep your first name and a link to the photo until they expire (see "Links you share").
Usage signals. When you open, save, hide, share, swipe on, or add an event to your calendar, we record the event, the action, the time, and your random ID.
Error reports. If something breaks in the app, it sends us one short error report: the error message, which screen you were on, the app version, and your browser or device type. These are tied to your random ID. Turning off Anonymous trends stops them.
Pickup games you post. Games you post (sport, venue, address area, time, title, notes) are public to everyone using the app nearby while the game is open. Your account ID is kept with the game so you can edit or cancel it; other people never see it. When you join a game, we store your entry and the first name you gave us, if any. Other people see only how many players have joined.
Reports and blocks. If you report a pickup game or a shared plan, we store what you reported, the reason you picked, any details you typed (up to 500 characters), the time, and your account ID, so we can review it and prevent abuse of the report button. The person you report isn't told who reported them. If you hide games from a host, we store that you blocked that host so their games stay out of your feed; the host isn't told.
Thursday picks email (optional). If you sign up, we store your email address, the town you gave us and its map coordinates, and how you found the app, only to send one email a week with things to do near you. First we send one email asking you to confirm the address, so nobody can sign someone else up; if it isn't confirmed within 30 days, we delete it. Every email has a one-tap unsubscribe link that deletes your address from the list.
App launch note (optional). If you ask us to tell you when the iPhone app is out, or (if you're outside New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania) when we reach your area, we store the phone number or email address you give us, your rough area (city and state), and how you found the app, only to send that note. After it goes out we delete that list. To come off it sooner, email us.
Suggestions and votes on shared plans (optional). When you open a plan someone sent you, you can suggest a different stop and vote on each one. We store your suggestion, the first name on your profile if you set one, your vote, and a random code your phone makes up so each phone votes once. Everyone with the plan's link can see the suggestions, names and vote counts, never who voted for what. All of it is deleted along with the plan after 60 days.
Feedback. When you send feedback we keep the message, the type you picked, an email address if you add one, which screen you were on, the town and distance you had set, the app version, and your browser or device type, so we can reproduce the problem.
Links you share. When you send a plan, we store it on our servers under a random short link for up to 60 days: the places and events you picked, their times, and your first name and photo if you added them. Anyone with the link can open it; it can't be found without the link. Distances from where you are are never included. A shared event link contains the event and its approximate location. Anyone you send a link to can see that.
Trend reports are built only from grouped statistics by town, category, and day of week, with small groups removed so no one can be singled out. They never include names, emails, precise locations, or device identifiers. To keep your activity out of them, turn off Anonymous trends on Your profile. That stops the upload of your activity and error reports from then on, not just their use, and if you turn it off before the app has created your anonymous profile, none is created. Your taste profile still syncs while you have an account; use Delete account to remove it from our servers. Our host also counts page views and visitors from its own server logs, without cookies, and we see those only as totals.
The app is for people 16 and older, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone younger. If you believe someone under 16 has given us information, email info@whatsuptonightapp.com and we'll delete it. Pickup games and listings for bars are for adults.
Everything travels over HTTPS. Profiles, photos, and blocks are kept while your account exists. Usage signals are kept in identifiable form for up to 24 months and deleted automatically after that; only aggregate statistics remain. Feedback and error reports are kept until they're resolved. Reports are kept while we review them and as long as needed to prevent repeat abuse. Pickup games are hidden from the app once they end, and posts that break our rules are removed. Shared plans expire after 60 days. Phone numbers and emails for the app launch note are deleted once it is sent. Your email stays on the Thursday list until you unsubscribe; an address nobody confirms is deleted after 30 days. Google-sourced place details are refreshed and not cached beyond 30 days.
